What makes that happen?

I saw this picture on Drudge earlier today. What we were talking about more than the rocket itself was what looks like a smoke ring that is rising to the left of, and with the rocket. It looks like it initiates from a seperate smoke plume that started just after launch. Is that just a trick of photography, or some effect of launching a rocket?
